Erasmus Web

96 x 120, oil on canvas, 2008        $3,000.00

Saint Erasmus, otherwise known as Saint Elmo, was martyred in ca. 303.  He is venerated as the patron saint of sailors and is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, saintly figures of Christian legend who  are venerated as intercessors.

Perhaps every imaginable torture befell Erasmus during his martyrdom.  Traditionally the arts show Erasmus in the Roman province of Illyricum, after boldly preaching and converting numerous pagans to Christianity. Where, according to the legend, his stomach was slit open and his intestines wound around a windlass.
